Prof. Borrell is a social epidemiologist with a research interest in race, ethnicity, socioeconomic position, and neighborhood effects as social determinants of health. She specializes in studying the Hispanic/Latino population and has mentored numerous students and fellows. She holds fellowships in the American College of Epidemiology and the New York Academy of Medicine, and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Preventive Medicine and Preventive Medicine Reports.
